VENOM

                                 PART 01 { 2018 )

Venom (2018) tells the story of an alien parasite mistakenly bonded to a failing reporter, satisfying fans with the realistic presentation of the villain they had known in comic books.

While the presentation of Venom looked effortless, quite a bit of vfx work was put into translating the two-dimensional villain into the real world.

In order to portray both the symbiotic and toned form of the villain, heavy animation was required. Each scene picturing Venom used animation to create the impression of true shape shifting.

Throughout the movie, Venom is pictured by himself, or at odds with Eddie Brock, his host. To film a creature that doesn't move like a human, a tall performer was used for reference, with a ball on a stick to further build height. Movement was captured with reference markers, and animated to create a realistic humanoid.

Lighting was also integral to the tone and realism of the movie. In order to show the unique patterns on tendrils, Venom was lit similarly to a car in a car commercial, with careful reflections and low-lights to define the form.

Many traditional stunt tactics were used. In the main motorcycle stunt scene, they used a mixture of professionally performed stunts and vfx.

Performers Joe Dryden and Robbie Maddison occasionally filled in for the creature/character combo, making jumps and other stunts on the bike possible.

Brock, played by Tom Hardy, is shown thrown off his bike in the film, the most extensive effect other than the creature itself. To bring it to life, Hardy was thrown from the bike in a controlled setting in front of a blue screen, and the vfx team added the tendrils.

It took intricate planning and precise work to record the largest stunt scene in the film.
